What is a kart?

A kart is a racing oriented machine that consists of a relatively simple tubular steel frame construction. Karts typically have small displacement two or four cycle engines that support low maintenance and a reasonable amount of parity among competitors. Karting has been regarded as one of the purest forms of motorsports and is also one of the cheapest ways to enjoy motorsport.

Kart Type

Overview

Generally, there are three types of karting. These are sprint, oval, and road race. However, these three categories can be further broken down. Sprint consists of the sub categories of two cycle sprint, shifter karting and four cycle sprint. Oval consists of two categories, these being dirt oval and paved oval. While road race consists of super karts, CIK or sprint style, laydown, but do not segregate between two cycle and four cycle as strictly as the sprint racing.

Sprint Racing Karts

Sprint racing karts are designed to race on tracks with both left and right hand turns. These tracks typically have an asphalt surface and are designed specifically for kart racing. Track lengths range from a fraction of a mile up to almost a mile long.

The karts usually use a no offset design, and are setup to to turn both left and right as best as possible. Typically, non shift applications use only a rear braking setup while a shifter kart utilizes a four wheel braking configuration.
